Opaque colors make flatter washes easier because the thickness of the paint layer is not so critical. With transparent colors, there is more difference between thick paint (darker, saturated) and thin paint (lighter, lower chroma). You can make opaque pigments a little more transparent by adding acacia gum. Add a drop of ox gall to reduce viscosity and flatten out your transparent color washes a bit.

Just found this and I’m wondering if you still feel the same or would change anything? Love your painting! I agree about the ease of detail work, without having to use hot press. It can be a great go-between! However, just to reiterate to people, cheaply made paper is never great for business, period, much less using the unsized, unstable side of it. The quality of watercolor paper matters greatly. With cheaper paper, there’s a definite “No” if you should use the back side, regardless if you can. I wouldn’t ever paint on the unrecommended side of even the best paper for a commercial or commissioned painting unless, like you, I had tested and loved the results. ❤🎨❤️

I tape my sketches to the computer screen and use that, works well enough but a light table sounds a lot more comfortable

You are right to be upset! in primary colors (in subtractive synthesis) there should only exist one and only magenta (like cyan and primary yellow)! I have a magenta tube which is a purple pink and another magenta which is an orange red!!! Thank you for revealing this dysfunction!
